The fire safety requirements for facilities have become stricter in EU countries and fire protection systems, equipment and procedures to ensure safety are needed more than ever. At the same time, the visual aspect of construction should not be understated. One of Finland’s five university hospitals, Kuopio University Hospital (KUH), is currently being renovated into the country’s most modern hospital. KUH is providing health care for over 840,000 patients in Central and Eastern Finland and hundreds of patients are visiting the premises daily.

The hospital has several subprojects that are ongoing, one of which is the underground passage from parking hall to the industrial kitchen. The heat and water piping systems in the passage had to be insulated. Being responsible for the subproject, the insulation contracting company Itä-Suomen LVI-Eristys Oy had to find a fire safe and visually appealing HVAC insulation product.

Coincidentally, Antti Laine, product manager at Paroc, was looking at the same time for a long-term customer willing to test a new light grey facing for all PAROC Hvac products, called PAROC Hvac GreyCoat. It is an alternative to other commonly facings used in insulation applications such as PVC, but with no additional painting or cladding needed. GreyCoat faced pipe sections and tape offers a full system for quick and easy installation

"GreyCoat pipe sections are fire safe due to their Euroclass A2L-s1, d0 classification, meaning that these products do not contribute to flashover nor create burning droplets. In addition, they create a very limited amount of smoke. We also offer PAROC Hvac GreyCoat mats and slabs, which are classified according to Euroclass A2-s1, d0. The facing works as a vapour barrier, therefore GreyCoat faced slabs, lamella mats and mats can also be used for condensation insulation. “For condensation insulation, GreyCoat tape must be used for the seams.” says Antti Laine, who has been following KUH´s subproject from the signing of the contract with the company Itä-Suomen LVI-Eristys Oy for the use PAROC Hvac GreyCoat pipe sections, bends and tape.

The first impression of the product was very positive. I see this to be a great product to use in HVAC applications where fire load needs to be reduced.” says Tapani Kojo, CEO of the company Itä-Suomen LVI-Eristys Oy.

“I see GreyCoat as a product of the future. I would definitely use it again”, Tapani Kojo sums up.
